Convert STL to GLB

Package an STL mesh as a GLB file that loads in three.js, Blender, Unity, WebXR and most online viewers. The triangles are kept; colours are added by your own material.

What changes in the conversion

Kept

  • Triangle geometry
  • Shape and dimensions
  • A single self-contained .glb file

Dropped

  • Nothing from the STL: it only contains triangles
  • No texture is invented; the model appears with a neutral material

Common mistakes

  • GLB has no physical unit either: set the scale in your engine.
  • Very dense STLs produce large GLB files because no Draco compression is applied here.
  • If the STL is not watertight, the GLB will look fine but still fail to print.

For 3D printing

  • GLB is for viewing and web delivery, not for slicers; keep the STL for printing.
  • Compress a GLB with the GLB compression tool if you need a smaller web asset.

Frequently asked questions

Is GLB better than STL for the web?+

Yes. GLB is a modern container with materials and textures, much lighter to load than STL for the same mesh.

Can I open the GLB in Blender?+

Yes, Blender imports GLB natively. The mesh arrives with a default material and no unit metadata.

Does the conversion add textures?+

No. STL has no texture information, so the GLB uses a plain material. Add your own material in Blender or three.js.

Need a model instead of a conversion?

Turn a photo, a drawing or a logo into a 3D model, then export it in the format you need.
