Convert STL to OBJ

Turn a binary or ASCII STL into a Wavefront OBJ file. The triangulated surface is kept as-is; STL carries no material, so the OBJ contains geometry only.

What changes in the conversion

Kept

  • Triangle geometry
  • Shape and dimensions as stored in the file
  • Multiple shells in a single OBJ

Dropped

  • Nothing to drop: STL has no materials, colours or UVs
  • Units are still ambiguous after conversion

Common mistakes

  • An ASCII STL with broken facet syntax may fail to parse; repair it in a mesh editor first.
  • STL has no units: an OBJ imported in Blender, Unity or CAD may need scaling.
  • Very dense meshes (millions of triangles) can freeze the tab; the tool refuses files above 100 MB.

For 3D printing

  • OBJ is not read by every slicer: most accept STL directly, so convert only if your pipeline needs OBJ.
  • Check the bounding box in your software; the dimensions are unchanged but the unit is still implicit.

Frequently asked questions

Does STL to OBJ keep the materials?+

STL has no materials at all. The OBJ keeps the geometry and nothing else; add a material in your 3D software if needed.

Is the conversion lossless?+

The triangles are preserved, but OBJ stores shared vertices and STL duplicates them. The shape is identical, the file organisation differs.

Can I convert a 50 MB STL?+

Yes, up to 100 MB. Parsing happens in your browser and may take a few seconds on a laptop.
