Convert STEP to OBJ

Turn a STEP solid into an OBJ mesh for rendering or editing. Each solid becomes a group, so you can still isolate parts in Blender or Maya.

What changes in the conversion

Kept

  • Triangle geometry of each solid
  • One group per part, with its colour
  • Millimetre dimensions as authored

Dropped

  • Exact B-Rep surfaces
  • Parametric history and constraints
  • PMI annotations

Common mistakes

  • A STEP without solids has no mesh to export.
  • Assemblies over 100 MB are refused; split them first.
  • Invalid files are rejected by the tessellator.

For 3D printing

  • OBJ is not a print format: convert to STL or 3MF for the slicer.
  • Groups help you hide interior parts before exporting a print mesh.

Frequently asked questions

Does STEP to OBJ keep colours?+

The tessellator assigns a colour per solid and OBJ groups keep it; MTL materials are not written.

Can I edit the mesh in Blender?+

Yes, OBJ is a common import format; expect a triangle mesh without parametric history.

Why do curves look faceted?+

STEP is exact CAD; OBJ is a mesh. Curves are approximated by triangles during tessellation.
