Convert PLY to OBJ

Turn a PLY scan or mesh into OBJ for editing in Blender, Maya or ZBrush. Triangles are copied one to one; vertex colours depend on the OBJ consumer.

What changes in the conversion

Kept

  • Triangle geometry
  • Vertex colours, if the OBJ consumer supports them
  • The original scale

Dropped

  • PLY-specific properties (normals, confidence, intensity)
  • No material is created

Common mistakes

  • A PLY with only points and no faces has no surface to export.
  • Gaussian-splat PLY files are not meshes and are rejected.
  • Files above 100 MB are refused.

For 3D printing

  • For printing, convert PLY to STL instead: slicers ignore OBJ colours.
  • Check for holes: scans often need repair before printing.

Frequently asked questions

Does PLY to OBJ keep vertex colours?+

The converter keeps geometry; vertex colours depend on the OBJ consumer, since OBJ has no standard vertex-colour support.

Can I open a scanned PLY?+

Yes if it contains faces. Point-cloud-only PLY files cannot be converted to a surface.

Is the scale preserved?+

Yes, coordinates are copied one to one; PLY does not declare a unit.

Need a model instead of a conversion?
