Convert PLY to STL

Turn a PLY surface mesh from a scanner or photogrammetry pipeline into an STL. The tool keeps the triangles and drops per-vertex colours, which STL cannot store.

What changes in the conversion

Kept

  • Triangle geometry
  • Shape and dimensions
  • Multiple surfaces of the file

Dropped

  • Vertex colours
  • Normals are recomputed for display
  • Point-cloud-only PLY files are rejected

Common mistakes

  • A PLY containing only points (no faces) cannot be converted to a surface.
  • Scans often contain holes and noise; the STL will keep them.
  • Large photogrammetry meshes may need to be split below 100 MB.

For 3D printing

  • Scans are rarely watertight: repair holes before slicing.
  • Check the scale: photogrammetry often outputs arbitrary units.

Frequently asked questions

Does it support PLY point clouds?+

No. Only polygon meshes with faces are converted. A point cloud has no surface to export as STL.

Are the vertex colours kept?+

No. STL has no colour support. Export an OBJ or GLB if colours matter.

My scan is huge, will it work?+

The limit is 100 MB per file. For larger scans, decimate or split the mesh in your scanning software first.

Need a model instead of a conversion?

Turn a photo, a drawing or a logo into a 3D model, then export it in the format you need.
