Convert STEP to 3MF

Turn a STEP solid into a 3MF package modern slicers read natively. Tessellation flattens curves, but the unit, object structure and colours survive.

What changes in the conversion

Kept

  • Tessellated geometry of each solid
  • Millimetres declared in the package
  • One object per solid

Dropped

  • Exact B-Rep surfaces
  • Parametric history and features
  • PMI annotations

Common mistakes

  • A STEP with only sketches, points or lines has no surface to tessellate.
  • Large assemblies can exceed the 60-second browser limit; convert one part at a time.
  • Invalid or encrypted STEP files are rejected.

For 3D printing

  • 3MF declares millimetres, so the scale is explicit in the slicer.
  • Check curved walls and threads: tessellation flattens them.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3MF better than STL for a STEP file?+

For modern slicers yes: the unit is declared, objects keep their names and colours can be carried.

Does the conversion keep exact CAD surfaces?+

No. 3MF stores a mesh here; the exact B-Rep surfaces and features are lost during tessellation.

Can I convert a whole assembly?+

Yes, but heavy assemblies are slow in the browser. Convert one part at a time for a print.

Need a model instead of a conversion?

Turn a photo, a drawing or a logo into a 3D model, then export it in the format you need.
