Decide what the model must communicate

Start with the job of the asset. An internal concept, a promotional illustration and a rotatable product-page model have different accuracy requirements. A concept can tolerate invented details if labelled clearly. A shopping asset should not suggest a feature the real item lacks.

For this guide, imagine a ceramic coffee dripper. Its outer silhouette may be convincing while its drainage opening is missing or its inner ribs are invented. Those differences matter more than a polished thumbnail. Write down the features a customer would use to choose this particular product.

Prepare evidence, not just an attractive photograph

Choose a sharp image with the entire product visible and a background that does not obscure its outline. Keep additional views for comparison, even when the generation tool accepts one input image. A lifestyle photo with hands covering the handle or props hiding the base is a poor starting reference.

Record the actual dimensions separately. Shopify’s guidance for commissioned product models asks for multiple views and measurements; one image does not replace that evidence. Source: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/expert-3d-model

Generate a first version, then challenge it

Upload your selected product image to Reforgers and inspect the result after generation. This is not a promise of an exact reconstruction or a direct publishing integration with your ecommerce platform. Hidden geometry inferred by the generator still needs your review.

Rotate slowly. Compare the silhouette at front, side and rear views. Look underneath. For the dripper example, inspect the central hole, base ring and interior. Reject a version whose most important feature is wrong rather than trying to conceal it with a favourable camera angle.

Separate shape problems from material problems

A printed logo may be part of an image texture rather than raised geometry. A dark patch may be a photographed shadow, not a cavity. Inspect the exported model under more than one lighting setup to distinguish surface appearance from actual shape.

Check brand marks, labels and colour variants individually. Do not invent missing inscriptions. If the appearance differs from the physical product, correct it with a suitable 3D editor or keep the asset as a clearly labelled concept. The cover of this article is an editorial illustration, not a tested Reforgers output.

Use a practical acceptance checklist

Khronos’ commerce guidelines address scale, geometry and textures across real-time workflows. They provide a useful review framework, not an automatic certification of an AI-generated file. Source: https://www.khronos.org/blog/introducing-asset-creation-guidelines-2.0-siggraph-2025

Before putting the model on a product page

Open the actual export in the viewer your store will use. A successful preview in the generator does not prove that every viewer renders the asset identically. Keep ordinary product photos available so buyers are not dependent on 3D.

  • Compare overall dimensions with the real product and check units in your editor.
  • Verify openings, handles, joints and hidden sides; flag any unverified detail.
  • Check that textures and material appearance survive export.
  • Test touch rotation, zoom and loading on a phone and a slower connection.
  • Confirm your platform’s current format and file-size requirements before upload.
  • Ask someone unfamiliar with the model to identify any misleading detail.

Know when another workflow is more appropriate

If the product must fit another part, communicate manufacturing tolerances or reproduce precise mechanical details, start from measured CAD or a suitable capture workflow. Do not infer that level of accuracy from a single photograph.

For a visual concept, image-to-3D can still be useful. Keep the source image, the generated version and a short review log together. Record what you checked, what you corrected and what remains uncertain. Publish only when the model’s intended use matches the evidence you have.

Frequently asked questions

Can one photo produce an exact product model?+

It can provide a useful visual starting point, but hidden surfaces and dimensions are not established by one view. Verify the result against the physical product or additional references.

Does downloading GLB make it ready for my store?+

No. Check the destination platform’s requirements and review scale, materials, file size and viewer behaviour. File compatibility and product accuracy are separate checks.
