First distinguish a floating part from an overhang
An overhanging arm may connect to the body elsewhere, even if its first printed layers need support. A detached accessory has no material connection to the body. These are different problems: changing support settings cannot decide whether the final accessory should be attached.
Rotate the model and inspect the suspected gap from several angles. A texture can make two surfaces look continuous. Use a plain shaded view when available and compare the silhouette with your source image. The cover is a conceptual illustration of separation, not an example of a tested repair.
Inspect components without losing their positions
Save a copy of the original STL and, if available, the slicer project. PrusaSlicer distinguishes splitting into objects from splitting into parts: separate objects are placed on the bed, while parts retain their positions within their parent object. Choose the operation that fits your inspection task; menu labels can vary by language and version.
Separating components helps reveal an isolated eye, a hand-held object or tiny debris. Do not delete everything except the largest shell automatically. A small component may be an essential feature or an intentionally separate assembly piece.
Choose removal, reconnection or separate printing
Remove a fragment only after you have identified it as unwanted. If a hand should hold an accessory, decide where a real material connection belongs. Repairing that connection in a mesh editor may require repositioning and a genuine union, not merely grouping objects under one name.
If separate assembly is intentional, keep both parts and plan their fit. If the reference hides the junction, do not assume the generator recovered it accurately. Revisit the design or use another clear reference rather than repeatedly repairing an ambiguous shape.
Check the result one layer at a time
Slice with the intended printer and material profile. Scroll to the first layer where the suspect feature appears. Look for a plausible supported starting surface, a continuous intended connection and the absence of unexpected gaps or missing details. Automatic repair can help with some mesh defects, but the Slic3r manual notes that it cannot solve every problem.
Remember that temporary supports disappear after cleanup. A piece that was disconnected before printing may still be separate afterward. Conversely, joining components in software does not guarantee that a thin junction will survive printing or handling. Check the final scale and inspect narrow contact areas separately.
A useful stopping rule before exporting
Finish when every component has an explanation: kept as part of the main body, kept for separate assembly, or removed as debris. Save a new revision, reopen the exported file and slice it again. Keep the original reference alongside it so that later changes can be compared.
