Choose the right PNG conversion
A transparent logo, icon or child drawing usually works best as a silhouette. Its visible contour becomes a solid outline with a controlled extrusion depth. A grayscale photograph is a different case: brightness can become shallow height, but it needs more cleanup and is often better suited to a relief or lithophane.
Do not expect an image-to-STL conversion to create dimensionally accurate engineering geometry. It creates a useful printable starting point from visual information.

Prepare the image before export
Crop tightly around the subject and remove accidental marks. Transparent backgrounds are helpful because they separate the design from the page. If the PNG has a noisy background, simplify it before tracing. Keep narrow gaps open enough for the printer nozzle or resin resolution you plan to use.
The best preview is not necessarily the most detailed one. At print size, a clean contour with slightly thicker features is more reliable than a finely textured outline that disappears in the slicer.

Set width, thickness and a backing plate
Choose a real-world width before exporting. Then set the extrusion thickness according to how the part will be used: a small badge needs enough depth to survive handling, while a wall plaque can stay shallower. A backing plate is useful when the design contains disconnected islands that would otherwise print as separate pieces.
Preview the underside as well as the front. Thin bridges, floating details and sharp internal corners are common causes of fragile prints.

Check the STL in your slicer
An STL describes triangles, not colors or materials. Open the exported file in Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio or another slicer and confirm the scale, orientation and layer preview. Look for holes, non-manifold edges, isolated islands and details below your nozzle width.
A successful preview is a starting point, not a guarantee for every printer. A small test print reveals more than a large first run and helps you tune thickness and support decisions.
