What makes an image good for 3D generation?

The best input is not necessarily the most beautiful photograph. It is the image that explains the subject’s shape with the least ambiguity. A strong silhouette, visible limbs or accessories, and predictable lighting give an image-to-3D system clearer evidence about volume.

Single-image reconstruction must infer surfaces the camera cannot see. Modern systems generate additional views before reconstructing geometry, but a clear source still reduces avoidable guesses.

  • A viewpoint that reveals depth, not a perfectly flat silhouette

1. Keep the full subject in frame

Do not crop feet, wheels, ears, handles or the top of an object. When a part exits the image, the generator has no reliable boundary from which to reconstruct it. Leave breathing room around the silhouette while keeping the subject large enough to inspect.

2. Use a simple background

A plain background makes foreground separation easier. It does not have to be pure white: a calm surface with good contrast is enough. If the existing background is busy, use Reforgers’ remove-background option before generation.

  • Remove unrelated objects touching the subject

3. Choose soft, readable lighting

Soft directional light describes volume without erasing detail. Harsh highlights can look like holes or material changes, while black shadows hide geometry. Avoid flash glare on glass, chrome and glossy plastic when possible.

4. Pick a useful angle and pose

A three-quarter view often communicates more depth than a strict front or side view. For characters, separate arms from the torso and legs from each other. For products, show the features that define the object while minimizing severe perspective distortion.

If the subject is cropped or only shows a face, the complete-body preprocessing option can create a more usable full-body reference, but generated regions remain an interpretation.

5. Inspect the result before printing

A visually convincing mesh is not automatically ready for manufacturing. Check thin parts, disconnected islands, wall thickness, scale and the underside before exporting to a slicer. GLB is useful for interactive inspection; STL is common for slicing; OBJ remains convenient in many editing workflows.
